An outstanding EAL department provides specialist academic and pastoral support to all international pupils as required. All students are tested and a personal programme is designed. Tuition is either individual or in small groups. The EAL staff also offer support and advice to students coping with integration into boarding school life. EAL is provided three times a week at no extra charge.
Our EAL Department offers intensive English language courses to help pupils gain the confidence and skills they need to study effectively and gain maximum benefit from their education at the school. Classes, taught by specialist teachers, are purposely kept small to ensure each girl has individual attention. When they reach an appropriate level they may also be entered for IELTS or one of the University of Cambridge English language examinations which are recognised throughout the world.
Younger overseas pupils attend most, if not all, curriculum English lessons but do not usually do French, Spanish, Latin or any other Modern Foreign language offered. Older EAL pupils do not usually study curriculum English, so that they can concentrate on studying towards FCE, and now IGCSE. For our older pupils in Years 12 and 13 they will prepare for the IELTS examination. Occasionally an overseas pupil’s English is good enough to forego EAL lessons and concentrate on mainstream curriculum English. They may also study an additional foreign language if they are able. In addition to this we are also considering offering foundation courses in several Modern Foreign Languages for Years 12 and 13.
Adcote has a long history of teaching overseas pupils and all staff are experienced at accommodating the needs of these pupils in their lessons. Individual help is given to assist each pupil in accessing as much of the curriculum as they are able. Staff liaise with our EAL specialists, as and when necessary for additional help; albeit one to one, or in small groups.
