REUNION OCTOBER 8th 2011

IMG_4561

There was a good cross section of the       Association present, including some who had not been back for many years.

The day started with coffee and the formal  AGM, when a new committee was elected  for the next three years. Diana Pritchard  was  re-elected as Chair/Co-ordinator  for    another term. She thanked the retiring  committee for their help and support and introduced those who had been nominated for the new committee. Two new committee members were elected – Liz Dawson (Edwards) from 1977 and Isabel Moseley (Udale) from 1984. There is a full list of all the officers and the committee on this website. Ruth Lea gave a vote of thanks from us all to the officers and committee for their ongoing work to keep the Association running and in good health.

Following the formal proceedings of the meeting Diana introduced the headmaster Gary Wright to speak to us. He brought us up to date on all the different things that have been happening at the school in the past year, it was very encouraging to hear that numbers are up and the boarding house is full. He told us about the new heating system that can burn ‘anything’ and thereby save money and the environment! He also showed us the new uniform that has been introduced this term. (see picture)

Lunch followed with the opportunity to talk to Gary as he circulated around the tables and to catch up on the news from friends. Many then took the opportunity to rediscover old haunts in the school and the grounds before we all departed.

There are a few photos posted here on the website but it would be good to see any others that those present took on the day. Please send them to Fenella who can post them online for all to see.

Mary Perrins (Fisk 1955) writes of the reunion ‘Carol Dain (Clulee) and Di Hartrup (Whittaker) with Ann Chapman (Forrest) and Nina Gregson went to the Adcote Reunion in October 2011.

Di said that she and Carol had an interesting chat to the headmaster and were pleased to hear about expanding school numbers and the need to make more boarding bedrooms available.  Nina wrote that ‘fire doors and other security precautions prevented wandering round upstairs; as she commented ‘we seemed to have so much more freedom in our days – V and VI form group walks to Valeswood, The Cliffe and other places – compared with the present!’

REUNION FOR UPPER V 1960

Over the past years I have met only a few of my form so decided to try to get us all together.

Rosalind Waters (Brunton) has been our link through the AOGA for many years so she and Margaret Pinnell were contacted and they were able to provide addresses for most of our year.  Others were more difficult to find but eventually I was able to contact all except two.  (If anyone has any details of the whereabouts of Judith Clarke or Patricia Handley please let me have them.)

On 19 July the thirteen of us who had lunch at my home in Blaisdon, Gloucestershire were Rosalind Brunton, Nilema Das (who flew in especially from Toronto), Jean Eyers, Jane Haighton, Rosemary Hanson, Sheila James, Joan Kendal, Jean McArthur, Pamela Morgan-Jones, Jane Pitts, Margaret Sherwin, Margaret Sutton and Tina Ward.

It was a wonderful day and the years slipped away to when we were all sixteen as we recalled our time at our ‘residential school for girls’.

It was lovely to catch up on all the in between years too and we could scarcely believe a full half century had passed since we were all together.  We also had news and messages from Vanessa Kempster, Virginia Lucius, Kate Turnbull and Jane Young.  Unfortunately I only made contact with Margaret Maclaren tin Canada too late for the lunch but she is now within the link.

Life inevitably had had lots of twists and turns for all of us, there has been joy and sadness, success and failure but the friendships formed in our early and formative years have not been lost.  They had been put on hold and are now renewed.

REMINISCING - 1967 GIRLS RETURN TO OLD HAUNTS!

I am pleased to report that there was an excellent reunion of my year on July 2nd and 3rd this year. Liz Bruce had fixed visits to Aston Hall and Adcote on the Saturday, after meeting for lunch at The Old Three Pigeons. There was a warm welcome at both places for the nine old girls plus their husbands/partners.  Marilyn Garvin (Fox), who lives in Zimbabwe had coordinated a family visit with the reunion, which was great. Furthermore, Lyn Ainslie (Byrom) just happened to be in the UK on a visit from her permanent home in Australia!! I had booked The Old Rectory in Wem for a buffet lunch on Sunday which was an ideal venue....beautiful garden and private conservatory room, so we wandered and chatted until the early evening.....perfect.

The majority of the year group are 60 this year.....this was one of the incentives to get together. Many are still in full time employment and/or doing very admirable work; we agreed that "Dot would have been quite proud of us”!

IMPORTANT! EMAIL/ADDRESSES

Please could old girls let us know if they have an email address.  It is much cheaper and easier for the association to contact members via email.  Although there are many addresses on the system there are still many blanks or emails that get returned as the address is incorrect.

This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Also it is important that the association has members’ correct postal addresses.

Thank you for your cooperation!
