The magnificent setting of Adcote School proved the perfect choice for the first meeting of a new organisation - Ladies in Business (LiB) - designed to allow local business women to make friends and feel less isolated in their workplace. An impressive turnout of 68 ladies from across the county enjoyed the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas. Pictured are LiB's founders (from left to right) Sarah Hands, Anita Roberts, Yvette Thorman, Ursula Prudence and Debbie Hammond with Sybil Ruscoe, who was the guest speaker.
After lunch the organisation's inaugural members and guests heard from Shropshire born celebrity Sybil Ruscoe about her experiences as a journalist and broadcaster. Born in Wem Sybil started her BBC career at BBC Radio Shropshire before moving to Radio 1, Radio 5 Live and Channel 4 Cricket.
Sybil began her speech by reminiscing about the last time she had stood in Adcote's Great Hall - as a terrified teenager who had reached the finals of the Shropshire Schools Public Speaking Competition. She was keen to pay tribute to her teacher Bill Woolley who had bolstered her confidence and taught her the importance of 'not being intimidated by anyone' and believing 'you are just as good as anyone else'. Advice she had used regularly when interviewing a variety of celebrities and sports personalities.
In addition to giving likeminded professional women the opportunity to meet LiB is a non-profit making organisation which believes in giving something back to the community. Supported by local businesses Adcote School , Dyke Yaxley, Lloyds TSB and PCB Solicitors, funds raised this year will be donated to their chosen charity - Breast Cancer Care.
LiB is the brainchild of five professional women - Debbie Hammond (Adcote Head), Sarah Hands (Business Development Manager Lloyds TSB), Ursula Prudence (Adcote Business Manager), Anita Roberts (Senior Business Manager, Lloyds TSB and LiB Chair), and Yvette Thorman (OutVie Marketing). Two more lunches are planned for later in the year with a charity fashion show in November. |
