Annual Rogation Service
Sunday, 09 May 2010 17:17

On a lovely sunny Sunday morning on the 9th May, girls from Adcote School took part in this year’s parish Rogation service. The service was held on top of the Cliffe, a nearby hill and it was a lovely energising walk for girls and staff! The service was proceeded by the traditional ‘beating of the bounds’, a centuries old custom to mark the parish boundary. Traditionally undertaken a few weeks after Easter, beating the bounds took place annually to ensure that the location of the parish boundary was known by a large number of people – something essential in the days before maps were commonplace.

The setting, on the top of the Cliffe was truly stunning, with beautiful views of rural Shropshire in every direction. In the lovely sunshine, the service by Rev Foster (the School Chaplain) was asking (rogation comes from the Latin "rogare" - to ask) God's blessing on the growing crops and animals. Prayers were offered for the community, for farmers, and all involved in food production.
