MP Praises Adcote Democracy
Wednesday, 25 November 2009 09:56

When local M.P. Daniel Kawczynski recently made a return visit to Adcote to present the newly appointed House Captains and School Council members with their badges he took the opportunity to praise the school for emphasising the value of learning about the importance of democracy from an early age.

He compared the School's election of their Council representative to the way in which MPs are elected to Parliament to make decisions on behalf of those they represent. The MP also recalled his previous visit when Adcote hosted a civic reception in honour of the service men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said it was important to remember that many people have fought – not just for this country but also in others - to protect people's right to democracy – and wished all those elected every success.

The first presentations were made to the senior girls chosen by the school to be House Captains. Georgina Edwards was elected as head of house for Glenmore with Jessica MacPherson as her deputy, Charlotte Lloyd Jones supported by Frances Jones for Innage with Emily Brown and Jenny Williams taking the respective responsibilities for Haughton.

For the School Council, presentations were made to Sumnina Pun and Gabrielle Brisbourne who were chosen by their classmates to represent the junior school followed by fourteen girls from the senior school, two from each year, who had been elected by their fellow pupils as their representatives. For Year 7 Danni Langdale and Charlotte Williams, Year 8 Marianne Fletcher and Natasha Tait, Year 9 Gabrielle Green and Georgina Welsh, Year 10 Grace Luk and Emily Tucker Prescott, Year 11 Francesca Gough and Amu Takahashi and for the Sixth Form Mel Proscott and Charlotte Lloyd Jones.

Headmaster, Gary Wright, added “We were delighted that Daniel could join us and share the school's commitment in helping girls to see and experience democracy in action.”
