Schools recently took part in the regional heat of the “The Great Debate” competition run by the Historical Association. The national competition is open to students aged between 16 and 19 across the UK.
The Shropshire finals were held at Shrewsbury School on Friday 6th November. Pupils entering had to write and deliver a speech on their local hero and why they still mattered in today’s society. Each competitor was given five minutes to present their case and then field questions from the judges.
Adcote School student Bryony Milliken won the event with her presentation on Wilfred Owen, the famous war poet from Oswestry. Bryony will now go forward to the National final of the competition to be held at Clare College Cambridge on the 13th March 2010, where contestants will be judged by a panel of experts.
