Adcote win in Historical Association Competition

Schools recently took part in the regional heat of the “The Great Debate” competition run by the Historical Association. The national competition is open to students aged between 16 and 19 across the UK.
The Shropshire finals were held at Shrewsbury School on Friday 6th November. Pupils entering had to write and deliver a speech on their local hero and why they still mattered in today’s society. Each competitor was given five minutes to present their case and then field questions from the judges.
Adcote School student Bryony Milliken won the event with her presentation on Wilfred Owen, the famous war poet from Oswestry. Bryony will now go forward to the National final of the competition to be held at Clare College Cambridge on the 13th March 2010, where contestants will be judged by a panel of experts.

Last week my team and I played a netball match against Lakelands. The team consisted of Clemmie (centre), Me (GA), Gabby (WA), Ophelia (GS), Vikki (WD), Aisha (GD) and Charlotte (GK). We won the match 36-1. Our defence was really strong with Aisha blocking most balls. Me, Clemmie and Gabby made a good team in attack. The man of the match was Ophelia who has never played a match before but managed to score 5 goals out of 6 attempts. This week we have another match against Marches. Charly Hickman, Y9.

Strawberries and showers: Summer must be here!
Adcote School held its annual summer fete last Sunday and right on cue the heavens opened. Luckily the organisers at Adcote were well prepared for such eventualities decamping into the beautiful Grade I listed building. Children's cake and book stalls were alongside fine English craft stalls including traditional wooden toys from Grandpa's Toys; pretty fabric accessories from both Gingham Chicken and The Whistling Cowgirl; bean bags and decorations from Teany Beanies; Solo Alpaca with their wonderful wool clothing; Caterpillar Children's Books and even Ted Bruce weaving his beautiful willow baskets. With delicious cream teas and Pimms, a harpist and lashings of bunting, not to mention a roaring fire in the Great Hall: a quintessential English summer!

Performing Arts BTEC at Adcote
In addition to the GCSE and A-level drama courses, Adcote will be one of the few centres where students can do the BTEC National Diploma instead of or alongside the existing drama qualifications. "One of the the advantages of doing the BTEC at Adcote is that we are able to fit the optional subjects to suit the individual interests," says Danny Davies who will be teaching the subject. "For instance one student may want to concentrate on stage and TV acting whilst another might want to specialise on the backstage work and a third might be interested in writing and directing." There is no written examination and the course has a strong emphasis on developing the practical skills.
