Inter-House Debate

On Tuesday 7th February, a senior school debate was held, with the motion being proposed: "This House believes the Monarchy should be abolished". Three speakers argued for and against the motion on each side. This was then followed by questions from the floor. A vote was held at the end with the motion being defeated. Overall an excellent and enjoyable debate with some very interesting points being made on both sides. Well done to all the girls who took part!

School Flying High in the League Tables

Pupils and staff alike at Adcote School were celebrating as their success in the recently released league table results.

Adcote is now among the best- performing schools in the country, according to new figures.

Based on an average points score for A-Levels, Adcote School is now ranked 13th nationally for all independent schools and is placed top of the league tables within Shropshire.

Headmaster Gary Wright, said: "I am delighted, that our hard working pupils and staff have been recognised in this way. It is a fantastic achievement, especially considering that we are a non-selective school, who emphasise a rounded and well-balanced education"

The school also recently celebrated Head Girl, Kasia Zielinska, obtaining a place at Oxford to read Law.

The league tables are published once a year and are an official Government record of how a school is performing.

Pupils Welcome in the Year of the Dragon

The supper menu for boarders got a far eastern makeover on Monday, as Adcote pupils celebrated the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Water Dragon.

Celebrations began in the morning, with an assembly marking the start of the New Year and a story of how each of the twleve years in the Chinese calendar were named. In the Juniors, there was a wonderful presentation about Chinese culture. We are all looking forward to our forthcoming Mandarin Chinese Club.

Sixth Formers Shine at Rotary Event

Two of our Sixth Form students recently had the opportunity to show off their public speaking skills at the Oswestry Rotary Club International Evening held at The Walls Restaurant. Lylee Chan and Valeriya Tsekhanska spoke with both confidence and affection, about their life at Adcote and
how it compares with their experience in their home countries.

They were joined by one of our Gap Students, Bridget Dabbs, who also sang Adcote's praises, while offering entertaining stories about life at home on the Crocodile Farm in Zimbabwe! The students also had the chance to mix with international students from other local schools.

Eco Team Snippets

• We now have some new bright green paper recycling boxes for each room in school – this should make it easier for the girls to remember to reuse and recycle paper.

• The last collection of clothes for Bag2School raised over £100 so a huge thanks to those who sent old clothes in – we shall be having another collection after half term.

• The school is also collecting used printer cartridges for recycling - we get paid a minimum of 50p per cartridge – and for some a lot more. Please bring them in!

• After half term we shall be starting to collect batteries to recycle. Although we don't get paid for these it is a good thing to do – batteries are very toxic and need to be disposed of and recycled carefully!

• Hopefully the boarders will soon see a new notice on their doors encouraging them to switch off all electrical appliances before they leave the room. This could save a lot of energy and CO2.

Meet the Gaps

A warm welcome to our new Gap students who arrived at Adcote this term. Carina Becker is from Germany and will be with us from January to April. She is a graduate from Frankfurt University and her ambition is to pursue a career in teaching. Katie Russell is from Victoria, Australia and she has attended Galen Catholic College in Wangaratta. Bridget Dabbs is from Chiredzi, Zimbabwe and attended Peterhouse School.

League Tables

As ever, at this time of year, the league tables are published and there is the usual jostling for pole position. Frustratingly for us, the league tables never show the real picture at Adcote. Almost half of our pupils in Y11 last year were not counted, as they were either over or under 16 years old when they took the GCSE exam. For example, the chronological age of girls from overseas rarely fits in the criteria that the Department of Education use when they draw up these tables. The Government has equally refused to recognise the iGCSE exam (which we have adopted) until this year. Within a small cohort this has a very significant effect.

The reality was that last year 81% of all grades at GCSE were awarded were A* - C, with 84% of candidates gaining a grade from A*-C at A level. We are rightly proud of our academic record. The all round-education we provide is about more than just good exam passes, which of course is crucial; but it is also about developing the skills and attitudes to produce confident and articulate young ladies, ready for the future. It is in this that we also do outstandingly well.
