Headmaster's Blog
7th July 2010

Thank you for all your support during the course of the past academic year. We have, as you will hear in my speech at Prize-Giving, achieved much success in many areas. Now as the holidays begin, we can look back on a very happy and successful year for the pupils at the school. I hope that our girls will take a moment to reflect on what they have achieved this year, before they inevitably turn to the summer holidays and what is to come.

I would like to thank the Leavers for all that they have achieved in their time at Adcote. We have enjoyed their company enormously and they have exemplified many of the virtues and values that 'Adcotians' embody. They leave with all our best wishes and we will follow their future progress with great interest.

We say also farewell this year to several staff. Mrs Prudence steps down as our Bursar, after eleven years of dutiful service to the school. The Bursar's role is all encompassing and I will have fond memories in particular of this years Abba Concert which she organised.

Mrs Lowdon moves on to enjoy some travelling and a chance to meet old friends and relatives in Australia. Miss Lindsay leaves us as our maternity cover for Miss Karen. I would like to thank them all for their contributions to life at the school and wish them well in their new ventures.

I wish everyone associated with Adcote School a most enjoyable summer holiday.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our Junior School social this week, it was a lovely event in glorious weather, with girls of all ages enjoying our splendid gardens. I think that the latter half of this term is one of the loveliest of times to be at school. We have had some warm sunshine and cloudless skies and there are lots of events to enjoy.

There is always a feeling at this time of year that the academic journey is almost done, with our exams nearly over and Sports Day has come and gone. Next week activities begin, with the girls no doubt swooping and whooping at Alton Towers and enjoying the sights and sounds of London. With the end of term now in sight, we look ahead to Speech Day on the 8th July and I am pleased to announce that our guest speaker will be Tracey Neville, the former England netball captain and sister to the footballers Gary and Phil.

The first half of term seems to have gone by remarkably quickly but the pace at Adcote has not slackened. We continue to enjoy the many activities and events that give our pupils such a variety of things tobenefit from. By the time you read this, Sports Day will have come to a close and with it the start of half-term.

With the inevitable focus on exams and study leave upon us, Adcote is a much emptier place. The girls sitting exams are working very hard and we wish them every success.

Predictably as examinations loom large, the weather takes a turn for the better and this is a wonderful time of year. Lighter mornings and evenings, some warm sunshine and the promise of summer around the corner. Adcote really looks at its best in such weather and the School and the grounds look stunning. We are all very privileged to live, work and study in such an environment.

The political events of the last week have been fast moving but the formation of our new government has shown that leadership and cooperation are, as ever, crucial skills in the modern world. I believe that schools such as Adcote have a vital role to play in preparing our girls to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Whilst the  academic curriculum is at the heart of what we do, we also provide opportunities for the girls to develop their other talents whether they are of a practical, physical or artistic nature. We also encourage the girls to be  confident, articulate and develop good social skills. This is what a ‘a well rounded education’ stands for.

Last week, girls in Junior 3 held a mock election - the result was (mirroring real life) a hung parliament! With the current interest in politics, our local M.P. Daniel Kawczynski will coming into school again soon, to talk to the girls about recent events and to try to explain how our electoral system works!

This term is always very busy and of course an extremely important time for many of our girls, with their forthcoming examinations. They are about to take their study leave and we all wish them the very best of luck.

One of our new girls, who arrived from Kiev, Ukraine wrote about her experiences at Adcote School, which is below. There are lovely moments, such as when I read this, that I am reminded of what a special place this is. I hope to see many of you at the May Ball and I would like to thank the steadfast dedication of the APSA commitee for all their hard work in preparation for the event.

My Experience at Adcote School

When I first arrived at Adcote School, I thought it was like a castle in a book. I love the beautiful gardens and all the animals like rabbits and pheasants.

The school has a lot of history: the buildings are old and unusual. I like going to a girl’s school. I like sharing a bedroom and chatting to friends in the evening.I have loved learning many lessons and my English has improved. I don’t want to leave this magical school!

The volcanic ash cloud certainly caused us quite a number of  problems at the start of  term, with many of  our girls stranded overseas. As with the snow in January and the swine fu alert before that, the school  coped admirably and carried on with ‘business as usual’.

This school year has shown a very positive increase in our pupil numbers, with an even larger number on roll forecast for September. While this increase is of  course welcomed, I should add that we are committed to small class sizes and for retaining the wonderful atmosphere at Adcote which makes this school so special.

The summer term has begun with some lovely sunny weather and we certainly have quite a number of  forthcoming events to enjoy. Tickets for our May Ball on the 15th are selling very quickly and I believe the price (£35) is very reasonable indeed, especially considering the menu that is being offered.

As you know, Bank Holiday Monday on the 3rd May, is a normal school day and we invite all our current parents to take the opportunity to visit us and explore areas of  the school that you are perhaps not familiar with. You are also invited to encourage friends to come along to see the school for themselves. Thursday 6th May is the day for the whole school photo, so clean uniform and brushed hair will be the order of  the day!
